STRIP DISRICT. This small restaurant with seating for about 30 is very popular, so reservations are a must. The fare is Italian, with favorites such as double-cut veal chop and several fish dishes. The space tends to be very cozy, and the service friendly.

SHADYSIDE. The pancakes are world famous. Well, maybe not world famous, but the locals swear by them. Other items on the menu at this sought-after joint are California French toast, and the homemade corned beef hash. Sunday breakfast is most popular. #13;#10;#13;#10;

STATION SQUARE. Located in the Sheraton Station Square Hotel, this steakhouse boasts a gorgeous contemporary interior and great views of the city. Home of "Steaks. Done well.", Pittsburgh Rare impresses with the full flavors of its grain-fed red meat. Indeed, sink into their perfectly seared 18-oz. rib-eye or 14-oz. NY strip, and it's easy to see why this is one of the Steel City's top places for steaks. NB Breakfast and lunch are casual dining affairs.

DOWNTOWN. Primanti Brothers is probably the most famous restaurant in Pittsburgh, and its main location is open 24 hours to satisfy even the direst of sandwich cravings. Their claim to fame is creating an entire meal in a sandwich ­ in addition to meat, you get your fried potatoes and Pittsburgh-style coleslaw (no mayo) right on the sandwich. Regulars at Primanti's suggest the double egg (surprisingly good early in the morning!), pastrami and cheese steak versions to get an authentic taste of this Pittsburgh favorite.
